When I was hired as the first physical therapist on the PGA Tour back in 1984, it was very typical to see golf address postures that were very rounded even for the best players in the world! Jack Nicklaus, Raymond Floyd, Fuzzy Zoeller, and many other players of that era, stood up to the ball at address with extremely "bent" upper and middle backs. No one in the golf instruction industry, at that time, understood how vital a straight" spine at address is to golf swing performance potential as well as to total swing performance. Bottom line, the straighter your spine is at address, the better your spine will rotate through your full swing and reduce stress in your lower back. Here is an example of a healthy, straight spine at address. One great exercise to build and maintain a straighter upper and middle spine at address is called "Reverse Shoulder Waggles." To do this exercise: ![]() Lie face down over the Swiss ball. Perform a "neutral" pelvic tilt and shoulder blade squeeze to achieve a flat/straight spine. (Picture A) Maintain your flat/straight spine, then reach your arms up into the 90°/90° "double tray" position. (Picture B). Hold this position for one full swing visualization, then slowly lower your arms to the starting position. Repeat 1-2 sets of 10-15 repetitions, 1 time per day.
